We have become used to seeing artists’ impressions showing how a new scheme might look but back in 1966, Bolton took it to a whole new level.

A large scale model of how the town centre might look under proposals known as the Shankland plan was installed at the side of the town hall to let residents see for themselves how things might change.

Graeme Shankland was a town planner and partner in Shankland, Cox and Associates which under took commissions from Harold Wilson’s Labour government to breathe new life into town centres.

His proposals included creating creating homes in the town centre, providing dedicated green spaces and extending existing parks - proposals which have all become topical today.

We wonder if any Looking Back readers remember the model in the town centre? Wonder what happened to it?
