A Bolton man was found to be driving under the influence of cannabis after his vehicle came to the attention of police on St Peter's Way.

Mohammed Munir reacted to the police being nearby and did not want to drive past them.

Bolton Magistrates' Court heard it later emerged that the 50-year-old had taken cannabis.

Suzanne Eckersley, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was seen driving a Toyota Prius by police on the A666 St Peter’s Way.

“His headlight was out.

“He reacted to the officers’ presence and seemed reluctant to pass them.

“Police proceeded to carry out checks to see if he had drugs or drink.

“He admitted he might have something in his pocket.

“They found a small snap bag containing the remnants of cannabis.

“A road side swipe confirmed the presence of cannabis.

“A blood sample was also taken.”

Munir, of Wigan Road, Deane, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of cannabis.

Tom Farr, defending, said: “He is exceptionally remorseful for this.

“He has no previous driving offences.

“A number of family members rely upon him.

“His sister relies on him to drive her to and from hospital.

“His family rely on him for day to day tasks.

“He was a delivery driver who worked 20 hours a week.”

She banned Munir from the roads for 12 months and fined him £560 for the offence.

She also ordered him to pay further costs of £309 to the court.

He was told he could pay the £869 which is owed at a rate of £80 per month.
