A man was found to be drink driving in Bolton – after being spotted going the wrong way down a street.

Police came across Callum Davies on Princess Street in the town centre while he was driving a Fiat Punto in May.

Bolton Magistrates' Court heard he was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

Suzanne Eckersley, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was seen by the police driving a Fiat Punto the wrong way along Princess Street at around 1.35am on May 25.

“A police constable approached the vehicle and there was a smell of alcohol.

“The police constable asked him if he had alcohol to drink.

“‘The defendant replied ‘yes I have had a couple of pints.’

“A roadside breath test was carried out.

“He was arrested.

“At Bolton Police Station further samples were taken.

“The defendant had 44 (micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath).”

The legal limit is 35.

At court, Davies, of Everside Close, Worsley, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with alcohol above the limit.

The 27-year-old opted to represent himself at court.

He said: “It was just a silly mistake.”

A legal advisor told the court that while the legal limit is 35, police do not prosecute people up to 40 so Davies was “only just over the prosecution threshold".

Davies added that he had recently moved in with a partner and presented a letter from his employers to the magistrates.

He added that his work involved regular travel to Leeds.

Chair of the bench Joanne Halliday said: “For the offence of excess alcohol were are going to fine you £400, this is reduced from £600 because of your early guilty plea.”

“You will be named for the minimum period of 12 months."

She also ordered him to pay further costs of £145 and said he could pay this at a rate of £50 per month.
