Last week in our daily Looking Back feature in the Bolton News we carried a photograph showing Bolton Market Hall from around 1895 which prompted a lot of interest.
Impressive as the building may have been, at this point it still housed a random jumble of stalls as you can see here.
It was clearly a real treasure trove of items - there probably wasn’t anything you couldn’t buy here.
Among the things we have been able to spot are fruit and veg, sweets, biscuits, plants and various household goods.
On the right if you look carefully it looks as though there are tea urns set out. Was this an early market cafe?
Eventually a more formal layout was adopted and some of the stalls moved to the Ashburner Street Market which opened in 1932.
