The £1.5 million scheme would alter the layout of the site to provide separate areas for excursions, express services and tour operators. The toilets would be modernised and a taxi office built next to the bus station.

The revamp followed several years of political debate and lobbying for cash with the scheme being part funded by money from the EEC.

It was expected the overhaul would take 18 months to complete.

Moor Lane had been used as a bus station since 1930 and the site had remained unaltered since 1969.
