A metal phone mast, which was installed just metres away from a historic Bolton building, now looks set to be moved

Earlier in May the mast was unexpectedly put up outside The Old Post Office, a listed building on Bradshaw Road, Bradshaw.

Resident Lisa Hill has said she was deeply concerned about the effect of the installation has had on her home and the surrounding area.

She said: “I just think it looks really unsympathetic, even if they had just built it seven yards away that would have made a huge difference, so I don’t think I’m being unreasonable.”

The Old Post Office is believed to be hundreds of years old and is one of the most highly valued historic buildings in the area.

The historic building has also previously been used as a school.

It is also found within the Bradshaw Conservation area, which has raised further concerns about the suitability of large metal poles.

In recent months, poles like these have sparked widespread across Bolton and elsewhere after being put up often with little prior warning by telecommunications firm IX Wireless.

The issue has provoked widespread complaints and even public protests, with demonstrations having previously been held in Harwood and Bolton town centre.

The poles themselves are classed as “permitted development” and therefore do not need planning permission before they can be installed.

But in some cases, antennae have been installed meaning, that the poles then officially become classified as “masts”, which do require planning permission.

In May, Bolton Council said that it was considering enforcement action against unauthorised masts with antennae like in the borough.

Where the Bradshaw Road mast is concerned, representatives have now said IX Wireless will now look for alternative locations instead of the site in front of the Old Post Office.

Cllr Leslie Webb, of Bradshaw, said: “I’ve worked continuously trying to negate the damage done by street detritus like this.

“It was sited within a matter of metres of a listed building on Bradshaw Road.”

He added: “I think this is now the sixth or the seventh out of nine poles that we’ve got relocated in Bradshaw now.”

IX Wireless have been approached for comment.
