Two teenagers have been taken to hospital, one with serious injuries, after a car crash in the early hours of this morning (June 1).

The crash happened on the M602 Eastbound between J1, M60, and J2, Salford Royal Hospital at just before 1am. 

The driver, an 18-year-old boy, has "serious" injuries and the passenger, a 19-year-old boy, was also taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing, according to emergency services.

The motorway has been closed since the crash and remains so as police officers investigate. 

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “This morning, at 12.40am, we were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the M602 motorway between junction 1 and 2.

"It’s believed that the vehicle collided with the embankment, causing it to overturn. 

"The driver, an 18-year-old boy, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"The passenger, a 19-year-old boy, has also been taken to hospital, but thankfully his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

"The road remains closed at this time, and we thank the public for their patience whilst our officers conduct enquiries."

Firefighters also attended the scene of the crash. 

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Just before 1am today (Saturday, June 1), three fire engines from Stretford, Salford Central and Eccles fire station, along with the Technical Response Unit from Leigh, were called to reports of road traffic collision involving one vehicle on the M602 between junction 1 and 2.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene where the vehicle had rolled over. Firefighters made the vehicle safe and colleagues from North West Ambulance Service took two people to the hospital. 

“Firefighters were in attendance for around one hour and thirty minutes.” 

National Highways currently says the incident is expected to clear between 1pm and 1.15pm.
