This remarkable, if slightly battered, photo gives us a glimpse inside Bolton’s magnificent market hall at the end of the nineteenth century.

Taken in 1895, you can see what an impressive structure it was.

Built in 1855, the market hall occupied a site of more than one and a half acres.

Several rows of terraced cottages had been demolished to make way for what many consider to be one of the lost jewels in Bolton’s crown.
