Police stopped a HGV on the M62 today after reports of a cannabis smell coming from it.

The driver was motioned to stop and police conducted a drugs wipe.

The driver tested positive and was arrested and reported.

A spokesman for GMP said: "Following reports of a smell of cannabis coming from its cab, this HGV was stopped on the M62 this morning.

"Driver provided a +drugs wipe and was subsequently arrested.

"Also reported to the Traffic Commissioner."

Recently, a number of drivers in Bolton were stopped by police for driving with cannabis in their system, with bans handed out.

A change to the law in 2015 mean it is an offence to drive above certain limits of certain illegal or prescription drugs.

According to the Police UK website the limit set for each drug is different, and for illegal drugs the limits set are extremely low.

They aren't zero to rule out any accidental exposure - for example from passive smoking.

The law was changed to make it easier to catch and convict drug drivers and to enable roadside testing.
