This photo shows what was described by the Bolton Evening News at the time as ‘Bolton’s most exclusive car park’.
The land at the junction of Bark Street and Pool Street was pictured in September 1973 when it was announced that a three-month parking permit would cost the princely sum of £8.25.
The land was at the centre of controversy as it had stood empty for more than a year and was starting to be taken over by weeds. Motorists were also put off using it due to the rough grand causing a few eyebrows to be raised at the contract parking price.
Borough engineer Geoffrey Read said the reason the car park wasn’t being used was possibly the car park’s distance from the town centre.
But critics cited another contract car park on the other side of the road which was regularly in use.
Does anyone remember ever parking on the site? Did you take out a three-month contract?
