A Bolton MP says he hopes the Football Governance Bill will still become law despite the interruption of the general election.

The Bill, which aims to appoint an independent regulator for the top five tiers of the English game, has won widespread support including from Bolton Wanderers.

But Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to call a general election last week means that the Bill’s progress will be halted until at least after the July 4 poll.

Bolton West's Conservative MP, Chris Green, said: “Really frustrating that we haven’t been able to take the Football Governance Bill through its final stages in Parliament because of the triggering of the general election.

“I was on the Bill committee and could see the commitment of the minister and the wider team to get it delivered.

“It’s an excellent piece of legislation, it’s supported by BWFC and will do so much for the game.

“Whatever happens at this election, we know this can be picked up and delivered soon.”

The bill has passed its second reading and will have to continue after the general election.

After the committee stage will go for a third reading before being sent to the House of Lords.

Once it has passed through the Lords, it will then go on for Royal Assent before it eventually becomes law.
