Bolton's Turkish Baths could be converted into three apartments under an application up for consideration by the council.

The applicant, Asif Ahmed Patel, applied for planning permission for the Grade-II listed premises on Great Moor Street.

The Turkish Baths closed in 1980 and at the time of writing they are unused after they were used as an office for a period of time. They could be converted into apartments – two one-bedroom flats on the ground floor and one two-bedroom flat on the first floor – if the application up for consideration by the council is given the green light.

The application said the architectural interest of the premises is to be preserved externally, where there is minimal work, and internally, where the work is to be respectful to features such as a timber staircase.

The application said: "It is noted that the location of the building is on a main street (Great Moor Street) within Bolton Town Centre and it is less than 100m from the main Bolton Interchange (bus and train). It is also noted that there is a large amount of other residential accommodation in the area. Immediately opposite the application building there is a former school house converted to residential accommodation and immediately adjoining the application building there is a residential development which is currently under construction.

"Taking into account all the points above it is considered that the building is sustainable and suitable for residential use."

The Turkish Baths were designed in the 1800s by architects Stones and Gradwell, of Blackburn and Darwen, who were responsible for a number of public buildings, including churches and schools, across the County of Lancashire. Their Turkish Baths were among more than 800 such baths in the UK by the beginning of the next century.

A consultation is open on the Bolton Council planning portal and the deadline for a decision by the council is next month.
