The consultation on the University of Bolton becoming the University of Greater Manchester seems to be confined to whether the change would be confusing.
There is a much bigger question to be asked: is it right to change the name from The University of Bolton?
I support Lynn Bridge’s excellent letter of April 3. I think the change would be a complete mistake.
Though I’m happy to be part of Greater Manchester in many ways, I think Bolton should retain its individual character and traditions. The name `Bolton’ is central to this. So for example, Bolton Wanderers is our football team, The Bolton Octagon is our wonderful theatre and the Bolton News our local paper.
Perhaps Professor Holmes, after nearly 20 years as Vice Chancellor here, is really looking for a change of scene?
The University and its students are very important to the town but this change would be very unpopular with Boltonians I feel sure.
