A man from Bolton has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving on the M62.
It comes more than two years after the fatal crash on the motorway near Burtonwood in September 2021.
Emergency services rushed to the M62 eastbound between junctions seven for Rainhill Stoops and eight for Burtonwood on Friday, September 24, 2021.
At around 11.35pm, it was reported that a black Audi A3 car had collided with the central reservation, and there was a subsequent collision involving a silver Mercedes SUV.
Merseyside Police, North West Motorway Patrol Group, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service all attended the scene.
A 35-year-old woman, the driver of the Audi, was treated by paramedics at the scene, but sadly died as a result of the injuries she sustained.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “Her family have been supported by specially trained officers throughout this case and ask for their privacy to be maintained.”
As part of a complex investigation by the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, a man has now been charged in connection with the incident.
Gary Toomey, 36 of Hollin Hey Road, Bolton, has now been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Toomey was due to appear before Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates’ Court today, Friday.
The force appealed in the hours after the crash for any drivers in the area who witnessed the collision, or who may have had dashcam footage of the incident, to come forward.
