A social media star, who is known as ‘the Robin Hood’ of TikTok for his funny viral videos, is preparing to publish a book.
Shabaz Ali, known as Shabaz Says on TikTok, is releasing his book I’m Rich, You’re Poor: How to Give Social Media a Reality Check, inspired by his hilarious viral videos where he mocks social media’s super rich.
The former Rivington and Blackrod High School teacher said: “I wrote this book to remind people of how extraordinary it is to be ordinary, to take pride in the lives we have and laugh at social media instead of comparing ourselves to it.
“Social media and the wealth on display can make the rest of us feel excluded, that we are less. I want this book to be a toolkit to help people differentiate between reality and some of what we see on our screens and embrace social media as a place of community."
According to the book’s description, the book is a “laugh-out-loud deep-dive into social media's ridiculously rich”.
The description says: “The world is full of books about how to be rich. This is not one of them.
“Today, many of us are feeling the pinch and being bombarded with portrayals of social media 'perfection' is making that pinch feel more like a punch.
“We may know that social media, with all its billionaires and beauty queens, is just a highlight reel. So why is it still making most of us feel so low?
“Comedian Shabaz Ali wants to help you see the funny side of social media again. Because while it looks nice to live up in an ivory tower this book reminds us that it is much more fun to be part of the baying mob that surrounds it.”
Shabaz, who also taught at Stonyhurst College in the Ribble Valley, created his TikTok account at the end of 2019.
His account mainly focusses on reaction videos. Videos in his ‘I’m rich you’re poor’ series, where he provides satirical commentary on videos made by seemingly wealthy, giving ‘povvos’(slang for a poor person) a reality check.
Shabaz, from Blackburn, has appeared on television shows in the past. In 2023, he appeared on Channel 4’s Strangers On A Plane and reality show The Circle, in 2022.
I’m Rich You’re Poor: How to Give Social Media a Reality Check is set to be released on March 26.
