Temporary traffic lights will be installed later this week as Network Rail continues its work on a bridge.

Ladies Lane in Hindley will be subject to two-way lights as part of Network Rail's improvement of six miles of railway to allow for electric trains to go between Bolton and Wigan.

The lights will be set up in both directions form 9am to 3pm from Thursday, March 14 and the following Sunday.

They will return for a single day on Friday, April 5.

On weekends, lights will work for 24 hours a day and will be manned during busier periods.

The lights will be in place on Ladies Lane outside Hindley Station.

In a letter Network Rail states: “The footpath will still be available to use during the works.

“Where tasks may have public interface such as delivery of materials, and operative will be present either side of the works and works will be temporarily stopped to led pedestrians past.

“The schools bus route will not be affected by these works.”

Ladies Lane was closed for several months last year for the bridge to be completely demolished and rebuilt by Network Rail.

During this time the body also made improvements at Hindley Station were also made.

The works are part of a £78 million investment to upgrade a 6.5 mile stretch of railway to allow electric trains to run between Wigan and Bolton in the future.

The improvements are taking place between the Wigan North Western Station and Lostock Junction.

The project also involves 450 new overhead line equipment stanchions, modifications to 16 other bridges and two level crossings.

There will also be platform extensions at Westhoughton and Ince with the aim of reducing overcrowding at peak times and allowing six-carriage trains to be used.
