Astley Bridge was at the forefront of the forecourt revolution in 1970 when this picture was taken.
For the Astley Bridge Service Station on Crompton Way was introducing self-service at the pumps.
Over 50 years ago this was a major change for drivers used to an attendant coming out and filling up the tank.
Tom Ashton, director of the service station said: “In 10 years time the majority of filling stations will be self-service.”
Incidentally, the caption on the original photo describes the petrol station as ‘the only one in Bolton with a helicopter pad’. Can Looking Back readers enlighten us about this? Email bygones@nqnw.co.uk or leave a comment
