A £40million project to build a Bolton medical science school has been held up nationally as an example of “turning aspiration into action.”
The Bolton Institute of Medical Sciences, one of the most ambitious development projects the borough has seen in recent years, is currently under construction.
Last Friday it was referenced by Levelling Up secretary Michael Gove MP in parliament as one of several projects intended to “catalyse growth in our great northern cities.”
Mr Gove said: “Our levelling-up fund has been a multi-billion-pound catalyst to level up the UK, turning aspiration into action, with over 270 projects funded to date.
“For example, in Bolton, £20 million will support the delivery of the Bolton Institute of Medical Sciences, a pioneering education and skills facility that will train 3,000 students annually and provide a direct route for learners into healthcare careers.”
Along with various other projects around the country, Mr Gove also referred to £172,000 worth of funding to help Margaret Haes riding centre in Holcombe expand its site.
The Bolton Institute of Medical Sciences, originally known as the Bolton College of Medical Sciences, was made possible after a levelling up bid was granted by the government.
A collaboration between the University of Bolton alongside Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, Bolton College and Bolton Council and will open on the grounds of Royal Bolton Hospital.
Last December the developers behind the scheme announced that they had spent more than double their local spend targets, initially set at £6m.
Instead, they have spent a total of £12.3m on the project, all with a 20 mile radius of the site.

The institute is now open for applications with options including nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy.
Mr Gove said: “Reflecting on our progress to date, our continued commitment to collaboration and partnership ensures that no person or place is left behind.
“By working together, we can harness the full potential of every region, transforming our ambitious vision into a tangible reality for all.”
The Bolton Institute of Medical Sciences is expected to take on its first raft of students in the autumn of this year.
