Tiny fish from Bolton Central Library and Museum’s popular aquarium have been making big waves across the world this week.
The Danionella cerebrum made headlines after scientists in Berlin discovered the fish can make sounds as loud as a pneumatic drill.
But what many people may not know is that the fish used in the experiment originally came from Bolton’s very own aquarium.
In fact, since acquiring the fish in 2006 and breeding them soon after, the small animals have been visited by experts from across the globe.
In 2015 the team from Berlin came to learn more about their care and prepare to transport some of the fish back to Germany for studies, where they have been creating a stir ever since.
Bolton’s aquarium remains one of very few places where the public can view these spectacular creatures up close.
Visitors can get even more familiar with the fish and hear their sounds at a brand-new exhibition open for one month only from 12 October in the Up Close Gallery.
Native to the Bago Yoma mountain range in Myanmar, the welfare of the fish is of paramount importance to staff at the aquarium.
The team are in regular contact with Thadoe Wai, a naturalist from their country of origin to learn more about them in order to offer the best care.
They are also in talks with various universities in the UK with the aim of sending some founder colonies to aid further studies.
Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Cllr Nadeem Ayub, said: “It’s amazing to see the attention these tiny fish are getting in the media at the moment.
“I am even more enthralled that they originated as inhabitants in our wonderful local aquarium.

“To be central to some of the world’s best studies into this species is testament to the hard work taking place in one of the towns most loved attractions.”
After opening its doors in 1941, the aquarium in Bolton Central Library and Museum has become home to more than 70 varieties of fish from all over the world.
Open all week and with free admission, it’s the perfect place to visit for families, fish enthusiasts and school groups.
