Staff and customers were evacuated from a town centre shop this morning after a fire alarm was triggered.

Two fire engines from Bolton Central Fire Station and one from Ramsbottom Fire Station were called to Sports Direct on Victoria Square at 11am after the fire alarm sounded.

Bolton Central Fire Station crew manager, Mike Lewis, said: “We attended Sports Direct in the town centre at around 11am.

“Three fire engines attended, two from Bolton Central and one from Ramsbottom and we were in attendance for about half an hour.

“The fire alarm activated in the premises and the staff, and all the customers evacuated.

“The shop manager said he could smell smoke and smell burning.

“So, we went in and investigated, and it was down to overheating of the electrical equipment in the communications room, there was no actual fire, it was electricals overheating.

“So, we isolated the electric supply and told the manager they needed to get a full check.”

The store has reopened and everything is back to normal.
