It was a sight which was all too common in Bolton in the Eighties. A once great industrial powerhouse being reduced to rubble.
On this occasion, crowds gathered to watch the felling of the chimney belonging to Ocean Mill at Great Lever in 1982.
Bolton’s own Fred Dibnah had been brought in for the demolition and used his favoured method of removing some of the bricks from the base of the chimney then setting fire to the wooden props he had put in which effectively supported the structure.
The former spinning mill on Settle Street had closed in 1960.
