A Bolton man has been charged after "balaclava clad individuals" led police on a high speed chase through Bury. 

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called to an address on Sunday, February  11 after residents reported a potential break-in at their home. 

After they arrived, police say the group, who reportedly wore balaclavas, got into a car and left, leading officers on a high speed pursuit though Tottington and Ainsworth. 

Officers say the car "far-exceeded the speed limit" and allegedly went though red lights.

Passengers also reportedly threw items from the car in an attempt to damage the police vehicle. 

The car chase came to an end after the driver was said to have crashed into another vehicle before three individuals left on foot.

One man was arrested, while two others fled and are being sought by police.

A spokesperson for GMP Bury North, said: " A member of the public reported to police that they could see some balaclava clad individuals trying to gain entry into their address.

"Officers from the town centre neighbourhood team responded to the incident and turned their emergency equipment off prior to arriving, this proved to be crucial in securing the element of surprise as we caught the offenders off guard.

"A pursuit ensued which started in Tottington and went through Ainsworth, throughout this pursuit the vehicle far exceeded the speed limit and went through red lights with no regard for other users of the road.

"During the pursuit the occupants threw items from the vehicle in an attempt to damage the police vehicle and prevent the pursuit from continuing.

"As the vehicle continued to flee into Bolton it collided with another vehicle which resulted in it coming to rest.

"One of the three were caught and this was the driver. The other two fled into nearby farmland and were unable to be located, enquiries are still ongoing in a attempt to identify them." 

Police say the driver, a 45-year-old man from Bolton, was arrested and remanded into a custody on suspicion of a number of offences, including, aggerated vehicle taking, using a motor vehicle without insurance, causing injury by dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. 

The driver was also charged with attempted burglary and possession of cannabis.
