An investigation is underway after a huge fly tip sparked “dismay” on a Bolton estate.
The huge collection of rubbish was discovered behind the Taiyabah Centre on Astley Street, near Tarvin Walk in Halliwell on Wednesday February 7.
This was reported to Bolton Council by people living in the area who say they had been alarm by rubbish constantly being dumped around there.
Cllr Kevin Morris, of Halliwell, said: “We have had numerous calls and emails from concerned residents about this ongoing issue with this particular part of the estate and my ward colleague Cllr Safwaan Patel reported it immediately.
“I went to view the fly tip on my way into town and was absolutely dismayed to see how much rubbish had been left here.
“This is totally unacceptable for people to behave in this manner and dump household waste on the streets of our ward.
“We can assure residents in Tarvin Walk and nearby Caldwell Gardens and Canning Drive that we are dealing with this very seriously and that our local enforcement team are now investigating this illegal dumping of waste.”
Cllr Morris said that by the morning of Tuesday February 13 the rubbish had been cleared up.
But he said this “costs a lot of time, effort and money to do it, money that comes out of peoples local council taxes that could be utilised on other services."
He added: “As ward councillors we hope the perpetrators are found and a fine can be issued, as myself, Cllr Rabiya Jiva and Cllr Safwaan Patel want a zero tolerance of this sort of anti-social behaviour that blights our communities.”
This comes not long after Halliwell was chosen as one of the first areas in Bolton for roll out of the new “Community Alliances.”
They have been introduced to replace the old Area Forums model as a way of bringing the council, business and charities together to help run services in their communities.

Since its launch, the Halliwell Community Alliance has focused in particular about promoting hygiene and tackling fly tipping.
Cllr Morris said: “We have just recently had a very positive Halliwell Community Alliance Week of Action campaign in our ward where several schools, mosques, volunteers and community groups gave up their free time and got together to help litter pick and tidy up our streets, parks & other green spaces to help to start to transform Halliwell into a place decent for all.
“So for me personally it is very annoying and concerning when something like this happens.
“We ask residents to always be vigilant and report any fly tip issues best they can via the Council website.”
