A week of action to clean up the streets in Halliwell has taken place.

Residents teamed up this week to take part in a huge litter pick following the meeting of a new community alliance group.

The week-long clean-up was organised by the Halliwell Community Alliance  to make the area a nicer, cleaner place to live.

Community Alliances are informal groups of local people who care about the place they live and work.

As part of a Community Alliance, members work to bring about improvements.

Various schools, community groups, organisations and places of worship have already signed up to take part to make a difference to the community.

Chair of Halliwell Community Alliance, Gwyneth Bailey, said: “I was so pleased and encouraged by the community response at our recent meeting, that so many groups and individuals wanted to play their part in improving life in Halliwell.

“We have some exciting plans and ideas for the way forward and this week is the very first stage in making those improvements.

“We encourage local residents to join us, have their ideas heard and play a part in making Halliwell bloom.”

The Community Alliance in each area of Bolton, formerly replaces area forums, where people would gather to talk about the issues in their areas and find resolutions to problems such as litter and sustainability.

Acting Secretary for Makki Muslim Society Bolton, Yakub Adam, said: "I have lived in Halliwell for the past 50 years and I’m now excited to hear that we have finally created something we can all engage and connect with during our spare time.

“Creating this Halliwell Community Alliance forum is an excellent idea where residents, young and the elderly can actively get engaged and share ideas to bring a change within our communities.

“Let’s get connected and build a better Bolton.”
