An independent café in Manchester as been recognised as one of the most popular in the world.

Online slots site Betway has pulled together a list of the world’s most popular independent cafes by measuring the social media popularity of more than 300 coffee shops.

It has compared the number of TikTok views, Instagram hashtags and Google search volume to create the list.

Federal in Manchester is the UK’s most popular independent coffee shop with more than one million TikTok views.

The café ranks in fourth place overall, beating cafes in the likes of Montreal, Canada and San Francisco and Los Angeles in the US.

Using the hashtag federalcafe, Betway found that Federal has 1,100,000 TikTok views and that the hashtag was used 11,332 times on Instagram. Its annual search volume (global) was 397,200.

The only other independent café in the UK that made the list was Feya in London.

Betway also shared a list of the UK’s top 10 most popular independent cafes and another café in Manchester made that list – Ezra and Gil was ranked in 10th place.

Betway said: “Federal in Manchester is the most popular independent cafe in the UK, with the second highest annual search volume (397,200) and the seventh highest number of TikTok views in the entire ranking (1.1 million).

Federal Café and Bar is praised on Tripadvisor with a 4.5 star rating from 1,459 reviews, at the time of writing.

One visitor said it was their “favourite cafe in Manchester”, adding: “Product is so good. Service polite and attentive. Coffee served can be hotter, by the time my americano got served it was lukewarm. But food wins it for me no doubt”

Another said: “Always great service , Olivia goes above and beyond with her amazing service and lovely smile , her coffees are always to die for and the French toast is delish , can’t wait to visit again.”

One reviewer said they “couldn’t fault anything”, adding: “Dropped into the cafe on Portland Street for a late Sunday afternoon snack. I had the Humus and sweetcorn falafel and it was amazing!

“It takes a lot for something to beat my expectations but this did. The staff were all excellent, made us feel welcome and completely relaxed. Another plus for me was that despite the bare brick walls there is effective soundproofing and so I was able to hear comfortably without the usual clatter of others' conversations causing me discomfort.
