Would-be patients have been warned that waiting times at Royal Bolton Hospital’s accident and emergency department have soared to more than four hours.
The Minerva Road hospital updated its accident and emergency department data on Sunday morning to warning the public that it was “extremely busy.”
People have been urged to think very carefully about whether going to A&E is necessary when other services are available.
A Bolton NHS Foundation Trust statement said: “No matter how busy our Emergency Department is, the most seriously ill and injured patients will always be seen immediately.
“If you choose to visit us and do not need urgent or emergency treatment, you will be safely supported to access an alternative service.”
It added: “Choosing the most appropriate place for care allows our ambulance and emergency department staff to concentrate on people whose lives are at risk, and can potentially save you a long wait.

“Our emergency department is not an alternative to a GP appointment.”
This comes as Royal Bolton Hospital continues to face huge pressures, most notably last Boxing Day when huge numbers of patients were faced with long waiting times.
The trust has advised that if people’s GP surgeries are closed then they can go to 111.NHS.UK or call 111, which will direct them to the best local service.
