When there is a collision between a lorry and a bus shelter there really is always only going to be one winner.
This great photo from October 1950 shows the aftermath of an accident in Astley Bridge.
A bus shelter near Sir John Holden’s Mill was demolished when it was hit by the trailer of a lorry owned by Blackburn-based British Road Services which became disconnected while travelling to Bolton.
Thankfully no-one was waiting in the shelter at the time of the accident, around 6.30 in the morning.
The shelter was knocked over by the impact with much of the metalwork being crushed.
Here you can see workers from Bolton’s Transport Department dismantling what was left of the shelter before taking it away.
A temporary bus stop was put up for passengers using the route.
