An Astley Bridge restaurant renowned for its £180 golden steaks is allowed to increase its capacity by more than double after an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate.

Beefalo Meathouse applied to Bolton Council to increase the capacity of its site on Blackburn Road from 90 customers to 225 customers more than two years ago.

The plan, involving the creation of a first floor dining area in addition to the ground floor dining area, was refused by the council's Planning Committee due to a lack of evidence it would not be detrimental to the area in terms of issues such as highways safety and parking provision. Previously more than 100 residents of the surrounding roads such as Birley Street and Newnham Street signed a petition in opposition to the plan.

Beefalo Meathouse appealed to the Planning Inspectorate on July 5 last year and, on January 5 this year, an inspector identified as K Townend allowed the appeal.

The inspector said: "The increase in customer numbers would not cause a significant adverse effect on the amenity and character of the area, with regard to highways safety and parking provision, or on the living conditions of the occupants of properties along Birley Street and Newnham Street in terms of noise."

The ruling on the restaurant comes a matter of months after it reopened following a fire which forced it to close for most of last year.

The roof of the restaurant was devastated after the fire broke out at the back of what was once Chinese-Indian eaterie Dhanak Deira.

A post on social media said: "We are eager to reconnect with our customers and to create unforgettable dining experiences together. The reopening of our restaurant represents a new chapter for us and we are filled with excitement as we embark on this journey."

The restaurant is renowned for its £180 golden steaks which come covered in gold leaf. It is the concept of Bayram Yuce, also known as Chef Yuce, who is responsible for a number of other restaurants with similar selling points including in Liverpool and Warrington.
