Bolton actress Amy Nuttall is the latest to join calls for a former Post Office boss to lose her CBE over the scandal which affected more than 700 branch managers after faulty Fujitsu accounting software made it appear as though money was missing.
The scandal is described as one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British history and is currently the subject of a powerful ITV drama, Mr Bates Vs The Post Office starring Amy.
Over the course of 14 years, more than 700 Post Office sub-postmasters were wrongly accused of - and some convicted of and even imprisoned for - theft, fraud and false accounting in their branches.
These accusations and prosecutions destroyed the lives of the innocent sub-postmasters who had to endure court trials, public humiliation, and huge personal financial losses, with the Post Office refusing to entertain the idea that the fault was with a new computer accounting system used in branches nationwide rather than with its staff.
One Bolton subpostmaster recently spoke out how it ruined his life and saw him shunned from society while he lost £130,000.
Amy said on X, formerly known as Twitter, post: “Hope people are tuning in to watch this.
“It’s an important one and everyone needs to see just how shocking and unbelievable it is.
“It’s gut wrenching and utterly heart-breaking what happened to these innocent people. Please watch and please share.”
Amy plays the wife of sub-postmaster Lee Castleton, who went bankrupt after the Post Office took him to court for losses.
Lee found shortfalls of £25,000 on faulty accounting system Horizon, and even called the helpline 91 times to no avail.
In the drama, Amy is seen comforting her husband Lee, and telling him their daughters were getting bullied at school after Lee’s court battle.
In a second X post, Amy called for the removal of then CEO of the Post Office, Paula Vennells’ CBE.
She said: “I just signed the petition calling on Paula Vennells, the former CEO of the Post Office to be stripped of her CBE. Will you sign too?”
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer have both resisted backing calls for a former Post Office boss to lose her CBE over the Horizon scandal.
Demands for the Honours Forfeiture Committee to remove the honour from Ms Vennells have emerged again after ITV aired a new drama into the scandal, which has been described as the most widespread miscarriage of justice in UK history.
Ms Vennells oversaw the organisation while it routinely denied there were problems with its Horizon IT system.
The Prime Minister on Thursday declined to say whether she should lose her honour, while Sir Keir Starmer stressed that compensation for victims is “overdue”.
An inquiry opened last year into the scandal and will end this year after as compensation of up to £600,000 is being paid out to those affected.
Amy is previously known for her roles in Emmerdale and Downton Abbey.
The lead character Alan Bates is played by Toby Jones. Alan was instrumental in ensuring justice was given to those accused of fraud and false accounting and started a campaign against the Post Office.
Mr Bates Vs The Post Office is available as a four-part series on ITVX.
