Police were called to a reports of a gunshot in Deane but did not find any injured person, The Bolton News has learnt.
Officers cordoned off a neighbourhood in Deane on Saturday afternoon with police tape remaining in place into Sunday.
Neighbours said they had not be told anything by police leading to concerns in the area over what had happened.
The Bolton News has now been told that police were called to reports of a gunshot in the area.
They were mobilised to the Briercliffe Road area just after 2.30pm.
It has emerged police attended but found no injured person, and no arrests had been made on Sunday.
Residents and politicians had expressed concern about the lack of information following the investigation.
Officers at the time had urged people not to speculate on what had taken place.
One woman who lives on the street said police told her to stay at home.
She said: "We do not know anything.
"Police were saying we are not allowed to leave.
"They said it was not safe.
"When we asked what was happening they said there was an incident and you are not safe.
"I have lived here for 14 years, we are safe here nothing happened - it is out of character."
One man said: "I came back on Saturday and I asked what happened.
"They said there was a serious crime.
"I have lived here for more than 12 years and it is not safe.
"There are a lot of people selling drugs and breaking car windows."

Detective Sergeant Paul Warburton of GMP’s Bolton CID said on Sunday: "We understand that the community are worried about this incident, and I want to assure everyone that we are doing everything within our power to reassure and keep the local community safe.
"I urge members of the public not to speculate on events and come forward if they know anything at all which could help our investigation."
The police have again been contacted by The Bolton News for an update.
