MOTORISTS certainly had no excuses for not knowing which lane they should take when this new road layout was introduced in Bolton town centre in 1953.
This photo shows the junction of Deane Road with Moor Lane and Crook Street.
On the left of the picture you can see one of Bolton’s ‘lost’ pubs, the Woodman’s Cottage. The pub was unusual in that it was tied to the Manchester-based Openshaw Brewery.
The pub closed in 1959 and was demolished in the late Sixties where the site became part of the Stanley Street car park next to the fire station. It would then become part of Bolton’s Sixth Form College which opened in 2010.
