A historic Bolton rope maker has adapted to “futuristic technology” thanks to a deal with an energy company, also based in the town.
James Lever Ropes and Twine, based on Morris Green Business Park in Daubhill, was established in 1856 and has adapted to new ways of doing business many times since.
The firm has now unveiled a partnership with Bridge Street-based Clique Energy, who say their battery storage technology will help reduce costs and emissions.
Managing director James Lever said: “We are excited about the cost savings this installation will bring and also to be minimising our carbon footprint, which is extremely important to us and our clients.
“We would highly recommend Clique Energy to businesses that want to protect their future by minimising energy overheads and help preserve the environment for generations to come.”
Clique Energy, founded in 2014 by Tom Cush, has also installed an EV charger for electric vehicles on the James Lever Ropes and Twine site.
This marks the latest stage in the Daubhill firm’s 167 year history, which produces a wide range of rope and cord products.
Now run by the sixth generation of the Lever family, the company also supplies ropes and cords to other industries in the UK, across Europe and all over the word.
Mr Lever and his colleagues will hope that the tried and tested methods developed over more than a century will blend well with the newer technologies developed by Clique Energy.
Clique Energy founder Tom Cush said: “The contrast between our futuristic technology and the manufacturing techniques that have lasted over three centuries at James Lever make this project really stand out.

“The battery storage installation gives them more control over their industrial energy usage, allowing electricity to be stored on-site on a constant basis.
“UK energy market prices are impacted by Geopolitics across the world, and with the events in the last 18 months, having certainty of supply cost is a key goal for all businesses.
“The technology we have installed at James Lever will allow them to monitor their energy consumption real time and maximise savings from solar power.
“The smart battery storage will offer significant savings for many more years to come.”
