A Bolton man died after being found unresponsive at his home.
David Green, 45, was found at his home in Bolton on December 7 before being taken to hospital.
He was later pronounced dead, succumbing to his injuries.
An inquest into his death opened at Bolton Coroners' Court on Thursday, December 14.
Speaking at the hearing, Police coroners officer Robert Struttman said: "Mr Green suffered from mental health issues and had a history of attempting to take his own life."
Mr Green's dad found him and called emergency services.
Consultant Carl Oakden recorded Mr Green's cause of death as hypoxic brain injury caused by a ligature.
Coroner Peter Sigee asked for evidence from his GP, mental health services, Royal Bolton Hospital and the senior investigating police officer for the case to be submitted by January 19.
The next hearing will be on February 20.
