The building of a new supermarket led to a jobs rush in Harwood.

The Safeway store was due to open on the site of the former precinct in March 1994 creating 108 jobs.

More than 1,000 people had applied for one of the positions at the Lea Gate supermarket.

Store manager Michael Elsworth said that 70 per cent of the jobs would be part-time and the vacancies covered every department in the supermarket.

Safeway is one of the many supermarket names which have disappeared. Many of the stores around the country were bought by Morrison’s in 2004 and a year later the last Safeway branded store left the High Street.
