A historic church organised a trip to the Mayor's parlour for its parishioners and school choir as its 125th celebrations continue.

St Joseph’s RC Church in Halliwell is markings its milestone 125th anniversary and involved pupils and staff from its namesake, St Joseph's RC Primary School.

The event was organised by Cllr Kevin Morris with children and guests given the chance to meet and speak to Mayor of Bolton Cllr Mohammed Ayub.

Cllr Morris said: “I was so pleased those from the school could attend with some parishioners from the Church.

“The children had a great time, and they were all absolutely well behaved throughout and were all very polite and well mannered.

“They are a credit to the school I would like to thank the mayoral team for such a very enjoyable and educational morning.”

As well as Cllr Morris and the pupils, guests included headteacher Nicola Rabbett, School teaching assistant and parishioner Sharon Harlow, parishioner, family support and school volunteer Mairead Pindar and her husband John.

Youngsters got the chance to ask Cllr Ayub about his role as first citizen and about what he most enjoyed about his role as Mayor.

The Mayor's attendant then explained the history of the Mayor's chains of office, the history of the town hall and showed all the guests various historic artefacts, maces, medal, paintings and other items that are kept in the parlour and town hall corridors.

After leaving the parlour the attendant took the guests to the Council Chamber, Festival Hall, Albert Halls and other rooms of interest.

The visit comes not long after St Joseph’s RC Church held a celebratory mass marking 125 years of serving the community in Halliwell.

Mrs Rabbett said: “The children had an amazing and lovely time today and they all have thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

“It is not everyday people get the chance to come in to this wonderful building in our town centre.

“The attendant was very knowledgeable and they all learned quite a lot about the duties of the Mayor, the history of the hall and town and about the rooms and halls.”
