A Coronation Street star was spotted buying a Christmas tree from sellers at a popular restaurant and fishing cabin in Horwich.
Every year, the owners of Curley’s Dining Room bring a range of trees and wreaths to their site in Wallsuches.
Actor Mikey North, best known for his role as Gary Windass in the ITV soap, visited Curley’s at the weekend.
Helen Kershaw said: “I have seen Mikey in here a few times with his wife and daughter for meals, and he bought a tree from us last year as well."
Curley’s, a family run business, was once 'just a desolate piece of land' that Helen and her partner bought on a whim 20 years ago. With no prior plans, they have created a fishing cabin, diner, and tree merchants all in one.
Helen said: “My husband was driving past and saw a sign: reservoir for sale. He came home saying I have to take you somewhere, we have got to buy this reservoir!”
Before Helen and her husband put an offer in, the site was abandoned for around 30 years.
She said: “We didn’t even have an idea for the land, my husband said it was perfect for fishing so said we could put a little hut up."
Initially, the couple only sold cakes and drinks, and after locals came in asking for bacon butties, they slowly began serving toasties and sandwiches before buying a big fish fryer.
For eight years, they lived on the premises, first moving onto the site in a portable cabin then upstairs in one of the buildings before settling at Adlington.
Helen said: “It was really scary because everyone kept telling us, it’s green belt conservation, you’re never going to get any planning passed!”
However, they were granted permission and the business celebrated its 20-year anniversary in August.
With the help of their son, Jon Kershaw, the family has been selling Christmas trees for the past 15 years. Helen said: “We started with about 30 Christmas trees, now we sell about 600 to 700 trees a year."
Their trees have been on sale since last Thursday, and are available to buy from 10am until 6pm, seven days a week. They also do delivery if requested. “We always get our trees from the same guy in Wales, Jon sorts all that out”, Helen said.
They are selling wreaths, potted Nordmann, Pine, Fraser, and premier trees. More information can be found on the Curley’s Dining Room Facebook Page.
