Emergency services were called to an accident on the M61 southbound near Chorley this evening.

National Highways reported the accident at around 7pm this evening, Thursday, after traffic was held on the motorway near junction 9 following a crash.

Emergency services attended the scene which caused resulted in the closure of two lanes on M61 northbound.

The motorway was closed within junction 8 until about 8.30pm. The road was closed for around two hours before being reopened northbound with some ongoing delays.

The motorway was blocked for around two hours and fifteen minutes. Traffic information service INRIX reported delays of around 30 minutes while emergency services remained on the scene.

It is not yet known how many cars were involved in the incident. It has not yet been confirmed whether anyone was injured in the incident.

Emergency services, including Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service have been contacted for further information.
