A health student in Bolton will be forced to delay her studies after drunkenly attacking a police officer and a security guard on a night out.

Bethany McCelland was with a friend at the ROC nightclub on Bradshawgate.

Her friend was removed from the premises and they both asked to get back in.

Bolton Magistrates Court heard she became violent.

She kicked a member of security and then made an attempt to leave as the police arrived.

Officers spoke to her at around 1.45am and she was arrested.

Katrina Beitina, prosecuting, said: “While sat in the police car she has a phone in her hand and was trying to make  call.

“Officers took the phone.

“This caused her to become extremely irate and aggressive.

“She started to lash out at officers.

“She kicked an officer in the left upper arm with her boot.

“She kicked again and hit the car window causing the frame to come out.

“She shouted at police officers calling them nonces.”

At court McCelland, 19 and from Woodbridge Drive, Tonge, pleaded guilty to assault, assault on an emergency worker, criminal damage and threatening behaviour during the incident on October 7.

Adam Whittaker, defending, said: “To say someone shows genuine remorse doesn’t even start.

“She feels humiliated, she is disgusted about what happened.”

He said she was a level three health student at Bromley Cross but it was a work placement that required a clean DBS check and if given a fine would have to pause this for a year.

He added: “I have said to her ‘you are still a baby, you are 19, do not let this stupid incident ruin what you have been working for.’”

Chair of the bench Kathleen Butterworth said: “You have shown genuine remorse and have no previous convictions.”

She fined her £1,660, ordered her to pay costs of £565 and compensation of £200 to the two people she attacked.
