“Their hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed and can be a beacon for other aspiring Mosques in the UK.”

Faith Associates, which runs the awards, was set up in 2004 to help meet the needs of different religious and ethnic groups across the UK.

They created the Beacon Mosque Awards in 2018 as a way of improving the standards of Mosques across the country and to help highlight the positive roles they play in their communities.

The Best Future Design Award, which the Makkah Mosque has been nominated for, was introduced in 2021 and includes Mosques that have recently been built or will be built in the near future.

The Grecian Street based Makkah Mosque began work on its new building in July of this year, after organisers worked for more than 10 years for permission to expand and to raise funds from the community.

They have previously said how this could help make more space for facilities for worshippers, with a gym having been suggested as well as a rooftop garden and a lift which will make holding funerals easier.

The existing building will then be replaced with car parking space, according to the current plans.

Public voting for the Beacon awards will be completed by November 24 with a panel of independent judges then set to review the contenders.

The winners will then be revealed at an awards ceremony on November 25 at the Werneth Suite Conference Hall on Manchester Road, Oldham.
