Almost 50 arrests have been made in Bolton town centre as part of operation to tackle night crime - which has resulted in a huge fall in drink spiking and robbery.

Operation Overspill was launched in May last year after, what were described as, persistent issues in the area.

High visibility police patrols were stepped up and  nearly 50 arrests for offences, including being drunk and disorderly, assault, robbery, theft, sexual assault, threats to kill, criminal damage and racially aggravated public disorder.

A dozen dispersal notices have been issued to remove groups from the town centre whose behaviour could lead to harm to members of the public.

Officers say there has been 67 per cent fall in spiking offences and a 59 per cent reduction in robbery.

Their work to tackle crime in Bolton town centre has been recognised nationally after being shortlisted for The Tilly Awards, which recognise the ways police attempt to address issues.

Officers worked with Bolton Council to ensure licensing training is given to staff to ensure they are briefed on safeguarding, search powers, challenge 25 and counter terrorism initiatives.

Chief Inspector Justine Topping, of GMP Bolton’s Neighbourhood and Partnerships team, praised the work.

She said: “Keeping people safe as they enjoy themselves in Bolton is of great importance to both Greater Manchester Police and Bolton Council.

“We are really invested in this operation to prevent and reduce crime in the town centre at night and, as a result, we have made a good number of arrests and made some really positive changes which will inevitably help us serve the public in the best way we can.

“We continue to promote this operation to ensure long term benefits are seen in Bolton in the near future.”
