People living with cancer are being invited to a free health and wellbeing event in Bolton next week.

The event on Wednesday will give people who have undergone, or are completing, a course of treatment for cancer the opportunity to find out what support, information, advice and facilities are available.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust and Bolton Macmillan Cancer Information and Support service, who have joined forces to host the event, say that it will help people to adjust to life with and beyond cancer.

Macmillan volunteer and former cancer patient Lesley McCormick said: “It can be hard to remember all the information and support that you are told about when you are first diagnosed with cancer.

“We are encouraging people affected by cancer to come along to the event, so they are better informed about how they can make a positive difference to their everyday life.”

This event, which includes free refreshments, will include two short talks about managing the emotional effects of cancer and coping with fatigue.

It will also provide an opportunity to talk to other people with similar experiences, which can provide reassurance, reduce anxiety and combat a sense of isolation.

Macmillan cancer information and support service manager Sue Summerfield said: “This is a particularly difficult time for many patients.

“They often feel they lose the safety net of support they receive when they are attending the hospital regularly for treatment and often find it difficult to return to everyday activities.

“We hope that this event will act as a springboard for future events to provide better information and support to people affected by cancer.”

The event is organised by the Bolton Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service and is one of a number of health and wellbeing events taking place across the country.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust lead cancer nurse Janet Keegan said: “We are excited to work alongside The Bolton Macmillan Cancer Information & Support Service to provide Information and advice for people in Bolton.”

The event will take place on Wednesday September 20 at The Bridge Church, 109 Bradford Street from 1pm to 3.30pm.
