Bolton’s hometown university has shot up national rankings to become one of the top 30 best in the UK.
The University of Bolton was awarded the accolade by this year’s Guardian University Guide, which ranked it 30 out of 121 institutions across the country.
The Deane Road university has climbed eight places since last year and is now the highest placed “post 92” university, meaning a former polytechnic that became a university in the early 1990s, in the UK.
Vice chancellor professor George E Holmes said: “The hard work of everyone who works at the University of Bolton is clearly paying off.
"This further move higher up the Guardian league table rankings shows that we are providing excellence in teaching and student experience when compared with some of the most renowned institutions in the UK."
Academics and managers now how to build on the university’s improved rankings with various planned projects.
Prof Holmes said: “The University has ambitious plans and a bold vision of the future.
"This can be seen by the £40m University of Bolton’s Institute of Medical Sciences in the grounds of the Royal Bolton Hospital which is well under construction.
"Once open to its first cohort of students in September 2024, this development will undoubtedly enhance the University's reputation further, training the next generation of health professionals to help the UK address its chronic shortage of staff in the NHS.”
The Guardian’s league tables rank universities by eight different scoring metrics, including student feedback, teaching and courses.
Many of the university’s course were particularly commended with three health courses ranked the third best in the country.
The BA (hons) Crime and Criminal Justice course was ranked fourth in the country, while the BSc (hons) midwifery (pre-registration) course was named the 10th best.

A university spokesperson said: “Students will rightly be delighted to see their university appear once again in The Guardian's list of the top universities in the UK.
"This year we have broken through into the top 30 in the country, moving several places further up the league tables for the second year running, this time to 30th.
"It is once again recognition of the investment the university continues to make in its students, which has led to our student satisfaction scores being top in the North West once again this year.
"Student experience and success is at the heart of everything we do at the University of Bolton.”
