A man currently in prison has been charged with murdering another man who died more than two years ago.
Police announced this week that Dean Hughes, 46, has been charged with the murder of Shane Maloney.
Mr Maloney died in March 2021, 15 months after police were called to reports of a disturbance in Leigh.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Hughes pleaded guilty to a section 18 assault regarding the same incident prior to the victim’s death and received eight years in custody back in 2019.
“Shane sadly passed away in March 2021, 15 months after the incident.
“At around 7pm on November 8, 2019, Greater Manchester Police responded to reports of a disturbance at an address on Wigan Road in Leigh.
“The case was subsequently resubmitted to the Crown Prosecution Service.”
Hughes, now of HMP Risley, is now expected to appear before Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court next month on Wednesday October 18.
