A group of Chinese students were welcomed to the University of Bolton to get an insight into how to prepare for British medical schools.
The 15 students were from the Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Services and arrived at the Deane Road university’s Institute of Medicine's Healthcare Summer School as part of a global outreach programme.
Vice Chancellor Professor George E Holmes said he hoped this would mark the beginning of long and fruitful careers in the medical profession.
He said: “This Medicine Summer School provides a really good insight into how to prepare to secure a place at a UK medical school.
“It teaches clinical skills that allows students to understand the work of a medic, as well as developing confidence in presenting the reason for a career in medicine.”
The University of Bolton has its own plans to open a medical school.
The students’ trip began with a four-day tour of London, where they visited famous landmarks including the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and the British Museum.
On arriving in the North West, the journey then included visits to Bolton Wanderers Football Club and a tour of Manchester City followed by a weekend at the Anderton Centre.
Students commented about the "warmth and friendliness" of the UK and how transformative summer school had been for their confidence and personal growth.
But the heart of the summer school were healthcare educational workshops, led by The Institute of Medicine's faculty members, which included psychiatry, radiography and surgical skills workshops.
As part of their experience, the students presented posters which they created based on their summer school experience to The Institute of Medicine.

Their summer school concluded with a Gala evening at the Albert Halls in Bolton Town Hall where guests included the Deputy Mayor of Bolton.
Professor Holmes said: “We are passionate about helping people from all over the world to achieve success and delighted to welcome these students from Shanghai.
“I am sure they have learned much and enjoyed a fantastic experience here in Bolton and visiting other parts of the country during their stay.”
The next Healthcare Summer School is expected to take place in early August next year.
