A Bolton family have been stranded in Turkey - while another holidaymaker was lucky to leave Spain before the travel disruption set in.

Chris Marsden from Halliwell arrived in Turkey on August 15 and was due to fly to Manchester Airport on Tuesday August 29 before he received a text to say it was cancelled.

It comes as an “unusual piece of data” caused widespread flight disruption, an air traffic control (ATC) boss said.

Many UK holidaymakers are stranded overseas since Monday after around 2,000 flights were cancelled because of the issue.

Chris said: “We were meant to fly back last night, but we got a message to say our flight was cancelled and it will be today when they will tell us.

“We got a private transfer and the rep said they will pick us up at the time specified.

“We were at the lobby waiting but no one came.

“We asked and they said because it was a private transfer through Jet2 they had forgotten to tell us they were picking up earlier, so they eventually told us they had found us a hotel, but we would have to get a taxi to it.”

Chris says that the situation has caused a lot of stress and anxiety, and although he has been told he will be flying back to Manchester, he says this remains uncertain.

He also says that some of the friends that met him, his son George, and wife Karen, have gone home, but they are currently waiting in the lobbying and hoping their flight is not cancelled.

He added: “We have dogs and cats in boarding care so will end up costing us more money and they have cancelled the private transfer so we will have to get the coach.

The Bolton News:

“We have not been informed properly and they are still not sure if the flight tonight is going, but we still had to be out of our room for 12 today and they said they will pick us up between 6.30 and 7pm.

“If we don’t get to go home, they will send us to another hotel.”

Jen Lane from Horwich says that her and her family were “extremely lucky” to leave Reus late on Monday August 28.

She said: “We are so extremely lucky.

“Walking into Reus Airport, the floors were covered with young children and families who had clearly been there for hours.

“We landed in Manchester August 29.

“There were no delays, but a special announcement was made as soon as we boarded the plane that we had to put our overhead baggage away as quickly as possible.

“Take our seats and be ready for take-off immediately.

“We had a 20-minute window to make, or we would be stuck on the plane for a considerable amount of time.

“We were told the plane had previously been stuck at Kerry Airport for seven hours on the tarmac, and therefore no food or beverages could be served on our flight.

“I think we all felt this was a small price to pay for being able to get home.

“Arrivals at Manchester was like a ghost town, as you can imagine.”

In a Tweet, Manchester Airport said: “Manchester Airport is operating a near normal flight schedule today, following Monday’s nationwide technical issue that affected air traffic control.

“We continue to advise passengers to check the status of their flight with their airline before travelling to the airport.

“As our airlines look to accommodate passengers whose travel plans have been disrupted over the last few days, our terminals may be busier than usual at times.

“We are working hard with our airlines and their handling agents to get you through the airport as smoothly as possible.

“We thank you for your understanding.”
