An army veteran who served in Afghanistan has been jailed after making threats to smash his former partner's face and telling her he would find her wherever she moved to.

Manchester Crown Court heard that Matthew Varomua slapped the victim's face in February this year.

He later grabbed the woman from Bolton and said “what am I an abuser?”

In June he made threats to smash her face in and said wherever he moved he would find her.

Police were called and Varomua, 36, was arrested.

The court heard Varomua had a breached a restraining order imposed against another former girlfriend by turning up at her home in August 2020.

After the woman saw him and reported the matter he was due in court in Wiltshire but failed to turn up.

Manchester Crown Court heard he went on to offend against a woman in Bolton between February and June this year.

Adam Brown, prosecuting, read a victim impact statement from the woman involved.

It said: “I would like a restraining order.

“I have had to move out of my address.

“I feel scared taking my children to school.”

Varomua appeared in court to be sentenced after admitting controlling and coercive behaviour against the woman in Bolton and also breach of a restraining order and failing to attend at court in Wiltshire.

Aubrey Sampson, defending, said: “The defendant is expecting an immediate term of imprisonment.

“He has had many problems stemming from his time being employed in the British Army and being on a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

“I am not putting that forward as any form of defence but it goes some way in getting an understanding of they the defendant would behave in this way.”

District Judge Gwyn Jones: “There is no prospect of rehabilitation.”

He jailed him for 82 weeks and imposed restraining orders banning Varomua, from Coniston Close, Little Lever, from contacting both women for ten years.
