The Bolton branch of Extinction Rebellion (XR) slammed Chris Green and Mark Logan for their record on sewage with protests outside offices linked to the two MPs.

The protests outside offices in Heaton and Tonge  Moor over the weekend involved members of Bolton XR as well as members of other organisations such as the Green Party.

Almost two years ago Mr Green and Mr Logan were amongst more than 200 Conservative MPs who voted against an amendment to the Environment Act to tackle the number of spills from storm overflows. The Conservative Party supported its position by saying some of the proposals were covered by the act already while some of the proposals would cost billions of pounds.

The protesters were in no mood to accept this explanation and they put up plaques on the offices in reference to the vote.

Wendy Maycraft, an organiser for Bolton XR, said: "These plaques shine a light on the government’s failure to protect our waterways, the world, and all of us."

Statistics show Bolton North East and Bolton South East were first and second in Greater Manchester in terms of the number of spills from storm overflows in 2022. The constituencies saw more than 1,200 spills last year, while Bolton West saw more than 800 spills last year, putting it 14th in the region, according to statistics from Top of the Poops.

Mr Green, the MP for Bolton West, acknowledged this is an important issue but he challenged the Green Party in particular for its approach to tackling this issue.

He said: "The Green Party are right to highlight these concerns over the standards of our waterways but the government is taking action on this. We've increased fines for companies when they release into the waterways. There will be investment and this will become less of a problem.

"The Green Party have been low key and if they want to make these arguments, rather than protesting outside my office, they ought to be on the campaign trail, choosing their candidate and championing their cause."

The Bolton News asked Mr Logan for comment.
