Police officers have seized nitrous oxide canisters after finding a group of youths with them at a park in Bolton.

While on patrol at Central Park in Westhoughton, officers said a group of young people ran off leaving gas canisters behind, which were then seized.

This was part of a campaign to tackle anti-social behaviour around Bolton.

A spokesman for police said: "PCSO's from the Bolton West team are out and about in parks and public spaces tonight as part of our summer campaign to tackle antisocial behaviour.

"Whilst visiting Central Park Westhoughton a group of young people made off, leaving behind a quantity of gas cannisters.

The Bolton News: Canisters

"These cannisters have been seized by officers.

"Antisocial behaviour can be reported via phone on 101 or via the GMP website https://www.gmp.police.uk/."

Recently, councillors in Bolton have backed a campaign to ban the gas canisters.

As part of a wider crack down on anti-social behaviour, ministers are looking to clamp down on the sale of nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide is included as an anaesthetic in medical and dental contexts and as a gas for whipped cream, and is often referred to as 'laughing gas'.

A spokesperson for the Local Government Association, which represents councils in England and Wales, said: “The problems caused by nitrous oxide in our local communities are no laughing matter.

“Councils are concerned that not only does it lead to a plague of anti-social behaviour but there is growing evidence that it can cause serious health problems for those who use it."
