BBC Sherwood filming underway in Atherton and Tyldesley

A crime drama inspired by real life murders in Nottinghamshire, Sherwood investigates crimes in communities that have become increasingly polarised since the 1980s miners strikes.

Broadcast in June 2022, the drama was a huge hit with the Guardian giving it a five-star review and the Telegraph calling it the "best BBC drama of the year".

Filming for the series also took place in Rivington in 2021 near the Pigeon Tower.

While the series is set in a Nottinghamshire mining village, many of its scenes have been filmed in and around the borough.

Series one included filming at Astley and Tyldesley Miners' Welfare Institute, as well as locations around Rivington and Manchester.

Returning to the area for series two, production teams have been spotted along Elliott Street in Tyldesley earlier this summer, as well as around Victoria Mill in Atherton this week.

Atherton was also chosen as the "perfect setting" by ITV bosses last year as the conclusion of a major Coronation Street storyline was filmed at Ena Mill.

Written by James Graham and starring David Morrissey, David Harewood, and Lesley Manville, season two of Sherwood is set in the present day while further exploring the themes that made the drama so powerful.

Introducing two new families, a complex web of gangs, rivalries, revenge, and betrayal collide to form the perfect storm in Nottinghamshire, which is on the controversial cusp of securing a new mine for the area.
