Family, friends and fans will be honouring Bolton born star Tom Parker on the late singer’s birthday this week with a picnic and singing event.
Tom, from Tonge Moor, was known to fans across the world as member of hit pop group The Wanted.
Following his tragic death from a brain tumour at the age of just 33 in March last year, his loved ones have ensured that a wonderful musical legacy will live on.
Cousin Leanne Parker said: “The main priority for us is to mark Tom’s birthday and just to keep his memory alive, but its also about his legacy and what that can do for others.”
The tribute events will begin at 12noon on Saturday, August 5 at Seven Acres Park, one of Tom’s favourite places, for a Picnic to Remember.
This will be open to people who bring their own picnic and will give them a chance to see a memorial bench in tribute to Tom, installed by friends of his after raising money last year.
The bench was made by homeless charity Emmaus for a lower than usual cost and Leanne hopes that this will inspire people to help the organisation in Tom’s memory.
She said: “They do so much for homeless people in the area and they need volunteers, not just money, so if this encourages people to maybe look at their website and see what they can do that would be such a brilliant way of remembering Tom.”
After the picnic, the event will then move on to The Swan in Bolton for a singer/songwriter contest for 4pm.
There will be contestants showcasing a range of different genres and organisers hope as many people as possible will come along to cheer them on.
As Leanne explained, this is a hugely significant venue.

She said: “When Tom was 17 and won the singing contest at The Swan it just really changed his whole mindset.”
She added: “So we really wanted to pass the torch on to the next rising star of Bolton because it can be so difficult these days for younger singers to find platforms.
“Even if just one person walks away thinking ‘yes, I can do this’ then that would be such a great legacy.”
The competition will then be followed by karaoke and festivities at the pub, all are welcome.
